Powerhouse Museum Sydney, Australia Steam driven engines, including merry-go-round featuring compressor driven organ (deafening), 'smell test' to show how smelling works (the only one I've seen so far). Last visited in 2016, may have relocated and/or changed.
MOTAT, Museum of Transport and Technology Auckland, NZ Early tramway running on 3km track, steam operated engines, aeroplane hangar exhibition (e.g. refurbished flying boat), early settler cottage, agriculture machinery. Machines run by dedicated engineers, great fun to learn from their expertise.
Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum Kyoto, Japan 18 Japanese steam locomotives, 6 in running condition, round house, turn table, oldest wooden railway station in Japan (1904),
Computer Museum Boston, USA history of computers, with the old mega boxes still alive.
moved to CHM, Mt View, CA, see below
Computer History Museum Mountain View, CA, USA history of computers, *lots* of hardware, must see
Exploratorium San Francisco, USA Disney Land meets the sciences, nicely done (been there around 2001, may have changed)
Science Museum London, UK history of steam engines, many others. Plan a few days to share between this and the British Museum next to it...
Deutsches Museum München, Germany Pioneering (IMHO) push-and-look demonstrations of all technical aspects of the last centuries. Two weeks are about the minimum time for a good look. Goody: Demonstrations of basic physical law for pupils and phd's alike. Vast revamping and upgrading in progress around 202x, see their website for details. Plan a minimum two day visit, if you can.
Deutsches Bergbau Museum
German Mining Museum
Bochum, Germany Very large collection of mining equipment, neatly done technical and historical overviews, extensive underground demonstrations of different eras of mining techniques, vast full-size examples of different lining techniques, plus nice view from shaft tower. Originally built to train miners, which explains the thorough overviews on nearly all aspects of undergound mining.
Maschinenmuseum Kiel-Wik
machine museum Kiel
Kiel, Germany Large collection of diesel and steam engines in working condition, run on "demonstration days". Collection of workshop tools and models. didactic tours for non-experts and experts alike.
Musée des Arts et Métiers Paris, France Large collection of mechanical models and exhibits.
